INDIGENOUS A&E: Performance theater, a new Chapter, film series

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — It’s shaping up to be a massive weekend at the movies, headlined by one of the most anticipated sequels of the year.

‘Wicked: For Good’ Poised for a Record-Breaking Debut

Wicked: For Good is defying gravity and soaring into theaters, and early projections suggest it could deliver the biggest opening weekend of 2025. According to Box Office Pro, the film is currently tracking for a $145-$175 million domestic opening.

But here’s where things get even more interesting, strong pre-sales and high audience interest mean there’s a real chance the film could open as high as $180-$210 million. If it hits that upper range, Wicked: For Good would join the ranks of the biggest November openings of all time.

The first “Wicked” movie was a runaway sensation, earning more than $470 million domestically, and fans are eager to see where the story goes next. Now the big question is can the sequel match that same energy?

Last Weekend’s Releases Take Spots Two and Three

As for the rest of the box office:

  • Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is expected to pull in $9-$13 million in its second weekend. The film exceeded expectations last week with a $21 million opening.

  • The Running Man is projected to land in third place, with Box Office Pro estimating a $7-$9 million weekend as it faces tougher competition from new releases.

Jack’s Review: ‘Wicked: For Good’ Delivers Magic, Heart, and Stunning Vocals

I saw Wicked: For Good, and if you loved the first movie or the Broadway show, you’re in for a treat.

The story picks up right where last year’s film left off, shifting the spotlight to Glinda the Good Witch, played by Ariana Grande. Cynthia Erivo returns as Elphaba, and together, the two powerhouse performers bring down the house with their vocals.

This sequel really gives Glinda her moment. If the first movie was Elphaba’s journey, this chapter is Glinda’s time to shine. The film deepens the connection to The Wizard of Oz, weaving in storylines that fans of the original will appreciate.

Grande and Erivo’s chemistry is electric, and you can feel it in every note. While I think the first film had slightly stronger standout songs, this sequel ramps up the emotional depth and ties the story together in a satisfying way.

It’s a super fun ride, and I’d definitely recommend re-watching the first Wicked beforehand to refresh the story. For me, it’s a solid 8 out of 10 and a must-see for fans of the world of Oz.

Looking Ahead

Next weekend, the animals take over the box office again, Disney’s Zootopia 2 hits theaters on Nov. 18.
