A PAIR of Salisbury filmmakers are returning to the big screen as special guests.

Will Stone and Adam Pickford, director and cinematographer of the critically acclaimed feature film The Fence, will take part in a screening and Q&A at The Everyman Cinema on Endless Street, Salisbury, on December 11 from 4 pm to 6.30 pm.

The event is aimed at students from Wiltshire College & University Centre (WCUC), where the duo studied, but is also open to the public free of charge.

The Fence began as Will’s graduation project while both were studying for a degree in Film Production and Cinematography at WCUC in 2017.

Set in the 1980s, the gritty comedy drama follows the lives of teenagers on a Bristol housing estate.

Tim Dodd, a staff member who works closely with students on the college course, said: “I hope they will get a little inspiration from Will and Adam because they are proof that it can happen.

“It will also be indicative of how hard it is to get a film made.

“It was a big struggle for them, and maybe this will be a good lesson to learn and an opportunity to be a bit more realistic about the fact that you’re not just going to walk out of the course and go and make a film.”

The original short film gained six million views on YouTube, eventually leading to funding for a feature-length version released in 2022.

Will wrote and directed the film, which starred Gabriel Howells and Sally Phillips alongside local talent.

The Fence was praised by The Guardian as a “likeable and sparky debut” and earned a five-star rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It was also selected as one of 20 films to tour Australian cities in a Best of British promotion.

Mr Dodd recalled their time at the college fondly.

He said: “They were like chalk and cheese really, but their skills complemented each other’s and they worked very well together on each other’s projects all the way through their three years here.

“They still work together quite a lot, although Adam is now a freelance cinematographer.

“Will is writing and developing his second film and has already raised the initial development money towards that.

“It’s a long journey, but it can be done, and I hope that will be an encouragement to our students.”

He also thanked The Everyman Cinema for hosting the event.

He said: “It’s very generous and we are incredibly thankful for this support.”
