Jessica Simpson opened up about an unforgettable moment from her early television career during a recent appearance on Entertainment Tonight, looking back at a scene she shot with Ashton Kutcher in 2002.
The singer and actress, who was only 22 years old at the time, remembered Kutcher’s reaction when she revealed she was a virgin—both as her character and in reality.
Simpson guest-starred on That ’70s Show as Annette Berkardt, a romantic interest for Kutcher’s character Michael Kelso. During the episode, their characters shared a romantic scene that reflected Simpson’s personal choice to remain abstinent until marriage. “I was just shooting a scene with Ashton, Michael, and I was telling him that we couldn’t do it because I was a virgin,” Simpson explained in footage from over 20 years ago.
Now 45, Simpson reflected on that experience with a sense of humor, reports the Mirror US. “I’ll never forget telling Ashton I was a virgin,” she said. “He was like, ‘Why?'”

Simpson received a purity ring from her father at the age of 12, and in her 2020 memoir, Open Book, she discussed the pressure she felt to maintain her virginity. She described the struggle of upholding this commitment while dating Lachey.
“One time, Nick hugged me, and I thought I was just going to burst into flames,” she penned.
“I had to push him away, not because I didn’t trust him, but because I was teetering on the edge of just giving in.”
She also touched on the media’s obsession with her virginity, labeling the attention as intrusive. “It gave America a storyline to follow,” she noted. “The sexy virgin and the long-suffering, but still understanding, hot prince. Nick loved the fact that I was so strong in my faith.”
After tying the knot, Simpson admitted that reality did not meet her expectations. “I expected the first time I had sex with my husband to be this transcendent experience where the heavens parted,” she shared.
“What I didn’t know then is that everyone’s first time is awkward, and that is part of it. And that it’s OK, but at the time, it’s tough to understand.”
