Joan of Arc was a peasant girl born in 1412 in Domrémy, in northeastern France. She believed she was guided by divine voices telling her to help and save French people during the Hundred Years’ War.
At age 17, she went to the Dauphin, Charles, and convinced him to let her support his army. Joan’s courage helped lift the Siege of Orléans, earning her the title “Maid of Orleans”.
Her rising fame brought danger. She was captured by enemy forces, put on trial, and accused of heresy. At only 19 years old, Joan of Arc was burned alive at the stake.
Today, she is remembered as a brave national hero. She was officially declared a saint by the Catholic Church.
