The iconic ‘80s reality TV show “Star Search” is coming back, this time finding its home on the streaming platform Netflix.
The show, which ran from 1983 to 1995, was a competition series that saw entertainers compete against each other in different categories, such as singing, comedy and dance.
The original run of the show helped launch the career of stars such as Adam Sandler, Britney Spears, Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake.
The new version of the show will return live on Netflix, with an adjusted format and real-time viewer voting, according to a press release from Netflix.
“What hasn’t changed is the emotional undercurrent that defined the show; what’s new is the immediacy,” the release reads. “Every performance, every reveal, every elimination happens in real time and is powered by audience votes, creating the kind of high-stakes momentum that can shift a performer’s career in seconds.”
The show will also have a new host. Anthony Anderson, known for his Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated role on ABC’s “Black-ish,” will step up to host. The show was originally hosted by Ed McMahon.
“The live voting feature is a total game-changer,” Anderson said in the release. “Knowing that fans from all over the world can cast their votes in real time adds a whole new layer of excitement and participation to the mix. It’s like we’re all part of the show and get to be one of the judges.”
The first episode of the revamped show will premiere on Jan. 13 and episodes will air live on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m.
