Comprised of Jayem and Ricky 100, Ottawa-based duo Wotts offer a fresh approach to indie-rock with an ever-changing genre classification that sparks both intrigue and sonic fascination. Thus far, their diverse discography sweeps through vibrant pop (‘PETALS‘), nostalgia-soaked narratives (‘Garden‘), and heavier-rock concoctions (‘NOT US‘).
Their latest release – the second track to be plucked from their upcoming sophomore EP ‘COPE‘ – ‘he spoke with conviction‘ showcases the duo’s love for Australia-originating psych-pop. Here, Tame Impala and POND are cited as direct influences that are overtly prevalent through sun-washed instrumentation and airy vocals.
‘he spoke with conviction”s predecessor, ‘terminal’ harks similarities to Twenty One Pilots with its experimental soundscapes, where this latest offering is more firmly grounded in lush indie pop. Thematically, however, the tracks share the same cynical undertones. ‘terminal‘ reflects on diffidence and inner turmoil, with ‘he spoke with conviction’ turning the mirror towards society, offering astute observations on the lies “we tell ourselves to get by”.
Talking on the release, Jayem confesses: “We wanted the song to feel like you’re drifting
between truth and illusion, a sort of hazy space where you can bury your head”. True to this intention, the track achieves a fluid balance between gravelly, woozy vocals and more commanding instrumentation that ebbs and flows from quieter, percussive moments to crunching electric guitars.
‘he spoke with conviction’ is a stand-out from Wott’s back-catalogue and ramps up excitement for their upcoming extended play.
