Starfighter Will Not Feature a Score By John Williams

According to Kevin McCarthyTV, Thomas Newman will compose the score for Star Wars: Starfighter instead of John Williams. Interestingly enough, it has been reported that the iconic Star Wars theme, originally composed by Williams, will not make an appearance in the film. This is incredibly surprising since there are few films in the franchise that take place without the original opening theme. Nevertheless, given the popularity of Newman’s other work, audiences are extremely excited to see what he will bring to the table.

The Star Wars franchise first began on May 25, 1977, and the world had no idea the journey it was about to undertake. Since the series’ beginnings, John Williams has played a part in the iconic franchise, typically providing the score for most of the films. Very few Star Wars series feature a score that wasn’t done by Williams, and even fewer completely omit the iconic Star Wars theme.

Star Wars: Starfighter is one of the latest film spin-offs and is set to take place completely outside the Skywalker saga. The only thing that’s been confirmed so far is Ryan Gosling’s involvement in the film. Other than that, there’s really no telling what story the film could try to tell. However, one thing is for certain: the movie will sound slightly different from what fans are used to.

This is not to say that Thomas Newman isn’t an incredibly talented composer. He has written the score for many of the most iconic films of the last several decades, including Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Wall-E, Elemental, and Finding Dory. Considering these amazing scores under his belt, there’s really no denying why he was chosen to write the score for the standalone Star Wars film. Yet, that doesn’t make his choice to omit the original Star Wars theme any less controversial.

Based on his performance, Newman could be one of the people chosen to continue the Star Wars legacy after Williams inevitably passes. Although fans are hopeful that it will not happen for many years, the transcendental composer isn’t getting any younger. At this point, Disney should at least be slightly considering who they want to take the reins after William passes.
