Two remarkable political figures in Iceland made history by shattering glass ceilings and leading the charge for changing a political field historically dominated by men.

In 1980, Icelanders chose the world’s first nationally elected female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. Not only was Vigdís a woman, but she was also a divorcee and single mother, which was something rarely seen in politics at the time.

Despite the initial skepticism and judgment at home and abroad, Vígdis served four successful presidential terms before stepping down in 1996.

Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir became the world’s first openly gay political leader, serving as prime minister from 2009 to 2013. Her government passed sweeping social reforms to empower women and the LGBTQA+ community. She guided Iceland through the 2008 financial crisis and the economic downturn that followed.

Another notable addition to the list is Jón Gnarr, a former actor, comedian, and politician who served as mayor of Reykjavik between 2010 and 2014. He founded the satirical political party, the Best Party, which began as a joke but soon became a real political organization due to its electoral success.

Arnaldur Indriðason is without a doubt the most famous contemporary Icelandic writer today. His crime fiction stories have been translated into many languages and published in 26 countries, and he has won multiple literary awards.

Second in line is Yrsa Sigurðardóttir, lauded for her mysterious, macabre novels.

Iceland’s visual artists draw inspiration from the nation’s dramatic landscapes, history, and folklore, often blurring the lines between nature and the abstract. From early modernists to contemporary innovators, here are a few of the artists who have played a vital role in shaping Iceland’s rich and distinctive visual arts:

  • Erró (born 1932) is one of Iceland’s most famous contemporary artists, representing the European Pop Art movement. You can admire his colorful pop art and political collages in the Hafnarhus Building of the Reykjavik Art Museum.

  • Ragnar Kjartansson (born 1976) is a contemporary performance and installation artist. He is celebrated for blending music, theater, and visual art in emotionally resonant works of comedy and tragedy. Not to be confused with Ragnar Kjartansson (1923–1989), an Icelandic sculptor and founder of the only ceramic factory in Iceland.

  • Nína Tryggvadóttir (1913-1968) was a modernist painter and one of Iceland’s first prominent female artists. She was known for her abstract compositions, paper collages, and mosaics, often featuring Icelandic landscapes and the northern lights. You can see some of her work in Skalholt.

  • Einar Jónsson (1874-1954) was Iceland’s first sculptor. He also designed the country’s first art museum, Einar Jonsson Museum and Sculpture Garden, where most of his work is now on display.

  • Gerdur Helgadottir (1928–1975) is an influential sculptor, celebrated for her work with materials like metal, clay, glass, and concrete. Gerdarsafn Art Museum in Kopavogur houses some of her works and is named in her honor. Her stained-glass windows can be seen at Kopavogur Church and Hallgrimskirkja Church.

Iceland’s Beautiful Women and Strong Men

Many Icelanders playfully state that Iceland has “the most beautiful women” and “the strongest men” in the world. Considering Iceland’s population size, the number of Icelanders who have won international competitions in these fields does make the country the most successful in beauty and strength, per capita.
