Zootopia 2 Dominates The Five-Day Thanksgiving Weekend

Hollywood had plenty to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend, as Zootopia opened to a stellar $156 million over the five-day weekend. Meanwhile, Wicked: For Good continued its victory parade to the tune of $93 million, while some older holdovers did some decent business, too. It’s a perfect example of the old adage, “a rising tide lifts all boats.”

Zootopia opened huge, with $156 in five days. For comparison, it took the original Zootopia 12 days to reach $154 million. Granted, that film opened in March and not over a big holiday, so it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, but it’s a sure bet that Zootopia 2 will eclipse the $341 million total of the 2016 original.

In second place, we have the second weekend of Wicked: For Good. Over its first ten days, the sequel to the prequel to The Wizard of Oz has grossed $270 million. It’s currently seven million dollars ahead of the original Wicked over its first ten days, but I expect the original to start pacing ahead by the end of next weekend, if not sooner. Still, even if Wicked: For Good winds up a bit less successful than its predecessor, that doesn’t mean it’s not still tremendously successful!

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t comfortably won the bronze medal, earning $10 million over the five-day frame. Its total after three weekends is $49 million, and it’s pacing a hair behind Now You See Me 2, which ended its run with $65 million back in 2016. Just behind Now You See Me, there’s Predator: Badlands, which brought in $6.25 million for the long weekend, bringing its total to $85 million. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous for Predator: Badlands after its second weekend drop-off of 68%, but it seems to have stabilized since then. I don’t know if it has the juice to crack $100 million domestically, but it’s still turned out to be a financially successful entry in the long-running action/sci-fi/horror series.

In sixth place, we have newcomer Eternity. I’ll never, for the life of me, understand the decision to release this A24 take on the classic rom-com formula over the Thanksgiving weekend, when it would have fared better over Christmas or Valentine’s Day. I suppose A24’s films always do their best business after the theatrical window, but I’d love to learn the official reasoning behind putting this one out to die against Wicked and Zootopia. The film, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner, grossed $5.2 million over the five-day weekend, which actually isn’t too bad considering it only played at 1,300 theaters. Still not great, though.

The last notable new release of the weekend is Hamnet, which opened in eighth place, grossing $1.35 million for the five-day weekend at only 119 theaters. It’s a solid start, but we’ll have to wait and see if it has the buzz to grow or if it’s a one-weekend wonder.

Next week, we’ll see if Five Nights at Freddy’s can maintain the momentum of the original, which opened to a staggering $80 million back in 2023. We’ll also have the long-awaited ‘director’s cut’ redux of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, an adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along with my favorite dreamboat, Jonathan Groff, and… Uh oh. I don’t know what Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution is, but it’s anime, and we always bet on anime, so don’t be surprised if this one becomes an unexpected hit!
