A pre-trial hearing for Prince Harry’s latest legal case was held in London last week, but a UK-based attorney has pointed out that President Donald Trump takes the crown when it comes to racking up court cases.

Harry’s recent legal claims have included cases against several newspaper groups and the Home Office, following the removal of his specialist police protection when he and Meghan moved to California in 2020. Meanwhile, since 2024, the US President has sued ABC, CBS, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, among others.

Last week’s pre-trial hearing was held as Prince Harry and six other household names are suing the publishers of the Daily Mail newspaper over alleged unlawful information gathering dating back 30 years.

Associated Newspapers (ANL) – which also publishes The Mail on Sunday and MailOnline – strongly denies any wrongdoing.

As well as Harry, other high-profile individuals taking action include Sir Elton John, his husband David Furnish, actresses Sadie Frost and Liz Hurley, Baroness Doreen Lawrence and politician Sir Simon Hughes.

Comparing Harry’s legal approach to that of President Trump’s, UK-based attorney Mark Stephens told Newsweek: “Prince Harry may have flirted with the courts, but Donald Trump has moved in, redecorated and claimed squatters’ rights.

“If litigation were a sport, Harry’s still in the amateur league while Trump’s playing in the Premiership. He’s just more litigious. Harry’s lawsuits are a bit like a royal garden party, occasional and well-mannered with, cucumber sandwiches. Trump’s on the other hand, resemble a baker’s buffet, endless, messy, burger-ridden, and everyone leaves feeling a little worse for wear.”

Spokespeople for the White House and the Duke of Sussex were contacted for comment.

Prince Harry’s last legal battle took place in May, when he lost a challenge to overturn his security arrangements in the UK. He spoke to the BBC after the decision, explaining that he felt “let down” and described his court defeat as a “good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up.”

Asked whether he had asked his father to step in on the dispute over his security, Prince Harry said: “I never asked him to intervene – I asked him to step out of the way and let the experts do their jobs.”

The prince said his treatment during the process had “uncovered my worst fears”. He said of the decision: “I’m devastated – not so much as devastated with the loss that I am about the people behind the decision, feeling as though this is okay. Is it a win for them?”

He added: “I’m sure there are some people out there, probably most likely the people that wish me harm, [who] consider this a huge win.”
