The beloved Australian children’s music group The Wiggles released a statement recently after two of its members were featured in a music video of a song that reportedly alludes to drug use.
The video, which, according to the BBC, was posted onto TikTok by musician Keli Holiday, shows Blue Wiggle Anthony Field and his nephew, Dominic Field, who plays the Tree of Wisdom, dancing in the background.
The video, which has since been taken down, is set to Holiday’s song “Ecstasy,” which contains the lyric, “Hey girl, come on dance with me. You and your pocket full of ecstasy.”
The caption to the video said, “The Wiggles get it.”
The video received some backlash from parents, and, as a result, a spokesman for The Wiggles released a statement saying that the band in no way advocates recreational drug use.
“We understand that a video circulating on social media has caused concern for many parents and professionals, and we want to address that directly,” the statement said, per the BBC. “The Wiggles do not support or condone the use of drugs in any form. The content being shared was not created or approved by us, and we have asked for it to be removed.”
“While Keli Holiday is a friend of The Wiggles, the video and the music added to it were created independently and without our knowledge,” the statement continued.
“We deeply value the confidence families place in us, and we remain committed to creating safe, positive, and educational experiences for children and families in Australia and around the world,” it said.
Formed in 1991 as part of a college assignment, The Wiggles have gone on to be one of the top-earning acts in Australia. Current members include Anthony Field (the only original member of the group still participating), Lachlan Gillespie, Simon Pryce, Tsehay Hawkins, Evie Ferris, John Pearce, Caterina Mete and Lucia Field.
