MADISON – Pup Mayor Cooper was all business Monday, performing his first official duty at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Madison’s Historic Downtown Entertainment District.

Tail wagging and ears perked, Cooper greeted the crowd of city leaders, business owners, and community partners, showing off his signature charm as Madison celebrated a major milestone for its downtown.

“Cooper is doing what he does best, bringing joy wherever he goes. He loved greeting everyone and being a part of the celebration,” said Joey Ceci, assistant to the Pup Mayor. “Cooper can’t wait to see all his friends in Downtown Madison, so get your green cup and take a stroll.”

Mayor Ranae Bartlett joined members of the City Council, Main Street Madison, and downtown merchants to mark the occasion, emphasizing years of coordinated work that led to the district’s creation.

“Today marks a commitment to our downtown’s future,” Bartlett said. “Establishing an entertainment district creates new opportunities for people to gather, support local businesses, and experience the unique charm that defines Historic Downtown Madison.”

Retiring State Sen. Tom Butler also shared his perspective on the growth of the city.

“In 1982, Madison had about 4,000 people,” he said. “Today, 64,000 call it home. That growth is remarkable, and our downtown is a jewel not just for Madison but for the whole state of Alabama.

“Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this effort, including Mayor Bartlett and all the council members. It has been a pleasure to represent Madison.”

The ribbon-cutting also included remarks from Michelle Epling, president of the Madison Chamber of Commerce; Mary Beth Broeren, director of economic development; and Jen DeLessio, executive director of Main Street Madison.

Madison’s downtown entertainment district has been a decade in the making according to Broeren.

“To say a few words, I am so thrilled that we are finally here to cut the ribbon on the arts and entertainment district for downtown Madison,” she said. “It has been a day a long time coming. And I know that the city appreciates the commitment and investment of all of our downtown businesses.”

DeLessio highlighted the collaboration between city officials, local businesses, and community partners, and made a special mention of Cooper.

“These businesses aren’t just surviving, they’re thriving, and this new entertainment district will help them grow even more,” DeLessio said. “We are thrilled to have Pup Mayor Cooper here to celebrate this historic moment with us.”

With Cooper officially on duty, Madison’s downtown looks ready for a season of fun, community, and a little extra tail-wagging charm.

The entertainment district is poised to draw residents and visitors alike, blending historic preservation with renewed investment and a spirit of celebration that earns Pup Mayor Cooper’s enthusiastic approval.
