Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ representative has heavily criticized Netflix and 50 Cent’s latest docuseries, Sean Combs: The Reckoning. They’ve reportedly described the documentary as a “shameful hit piece” and an attempt to “sensationalize every minute of Mr. Combs’s life.”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs criticizes Netflix and 50 Cent for Sean Combs: The Reckoning

Netflix’s Sean Combs: The Reckoning explores the legal troubles surrounding American music producer Sean “Diddy” Combs. However, Comb’s representative has criticized the docuseries for using “stolen footage” and had “expected fairness” from the streaming giant (via Variety).

“Netflix’s so-called ‘documentary’ is a shameful hit piece. Today’s GMA teaser confirms that Netflix relied on stolen footage that was never authorized for release,” the official statement read.

It continues, “As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Mr. Combs has been amassing footage since he was 19 to tell his own story, in his own way. It is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work.”

The statement then accused the company of using the footage to “sensationalize every minute of Mr. Combs’s life, without regard for truth, in order to capitalize on a never-ending media frenzy.” It added emphatically that if Netflix “cared about truth,” they would not use the footage “out of context.”

The statement also called out the docuseries’ producer and rapper Curtis 50 Cent. It alleged Jackson to be a “longtime adversary with a personal vendetta” against Combs. The rep also claimed that the whole situation is a “personal breach of trust,” since Combs has “long respected” Netflix’s CEO, Ted Sarandos.

After Comb’s representative released the statement, Variety reached out to Netflix for a response. Instead of providing an official response, Netflix’s spokesperson referred the outlet to a quote from the series’ director, Alexandria Stapleton.

“It came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights,” Stapleton said. “We moved heaven and earth to keep the filmmaker’s identity confidential. One thing about Sean Combs is that he’s always filming himself, and it’s been an obsession throughout the decades.”

Stapleton further added, “We also reached out to Sean Combs’ legal team for an interview and comment multiple times, but did not hear back.”

Sean Combs: The Reckoning is currently streaming on Netflix.
