Sweeney appeared on the December 1 episode of the Awards Chatter podcast to promote her upcoming movie, “Christy.” However, she couldn’t restrict herself from revealing a few untoward personal experiences about how her parents paid the price for her decision to become an actor.
The “Euphoria” star revealed that her family relocated from Spokane, Washington, to Los Angeles during her childhood to support her dream of becoming an actor. Nevertheless, this move left her family in an economic crisis due to the comparatively high cost of living in LA. Sweeney said, “Growing up in a small town, when you come to L.A., like most of you probably know, prices in L. A. are crazy. Not anything like where I came from.”
Moreover, Sydney’s father, Steven Sweeney, soon “lost his job,” which worsened things for the family. The 28-year-old revealed that her parents eventually filed for bankruptcy when she was just 16, and then a divorce.
“My family filed for bankruptcy when I was 16,” said Sweeney. “They filed for divorce, and I felt like a lot of it was my fault because I had brought them to the city [and] uplifted their entire lives, and I blamed myself for a long time.”
The “Sharp Objects” actress’s self-induced guilt about being the reason behind her parents’ separation lit a fire in her to succeed in her chosen field, so that she could do her best for both.
“I put a lot of pressure on myself of needing to succeed and achieve all these things so I could put different things back together,” she said.
