One of my favorite musical memories from this year is the moment that almost the entire Stereogum staff, all slaphappy and exhausted, got together to dance like goofballs to an extremely late-night Floating Points set at Primavera. That was some fun shit. Floating Points, the adventurous UK dance producer, released his club-centric album Cascade last year. A few months ago, Floating Points and Fred again.. teamed up in the single “Ambery.” Today, Floating Points has a new track of his own.
On the seven-minute “Corner Of My Eye,” Floating Points moves away from the dance music that he’s been making recently, back into the zone of jazzy contemplation. He’s very, very good at that. Floating Points’ crowning achievement is Promises, the 2021 album that he recorded with the late Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra. The blissed-out “Corner Of My Eye” is full of live percussion and tingly vibraphones, and it works along those same lines. Let it sweep you away below.
