Jason Kelce might be an NFL star, but just like everyone else, he’s experienced painful times that have brought him to tears.
One instance that’s not a secret to the public eye is the pregnancy loss he and his wife, Kylie Kelce, endured back in 2018.
Though the retired NFL star and his wife are now parents to four daughters, the tragic event took place before the couple welcomed their first child together, Wyatt.
On Wednesday, Jason Kelce attended the March of Dimes 43rd Annual Sports Luncheon, which was held at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, to accept the March of Dimes Sports Achievement Award, introduced by Kylie Kelce herself.
When the former NFL player spoke about their bout with miscarriage, he shared that the experience was “absolutely devastating” to go through.
As previously reported, on an Oct. 2 episode of her “Not Gonna Lie” podcast, Kylie Kelce revealed that her first positive pregnancy test happened in August 2018. She then went to the doctor at six weeks. Even though the baby measured a few days small, everything appeared normal.
She and Jason Kelce, 37, then traveled to London, where the Philadelphia Eagles played a game ahead of her 12-week appointment, so she scheduled a visit for when she returned. While in London, they shared the good news with the Kelce family.
She later learned that she had miscarried when she got back to the states. What’s more, she found out she had lost the baby on Jason Kelce’s birthday, Nov. 5, 2018.
“I remember going out to my truck in the middle of practice and meetings, overcome with grief and emotion,” Jason Kelce shared, per People. “You really find out in moments like those how awesome sports are [and] how awesome teams are. There are so many people that shared with me, coaches, teammates, people within the Eagles building, friends of ours, and you really find out how prevalent this actually is. How often miscarriages happen. And it’s something that I think, a lot of times, often doesn’t get said and spoken about.”
He added that it was “hugely impactful” for him and his wife to have support around them during the strenuous time. It was also eye-opening for them because they realized they “weren’t alone.”
Jason Kelce concluded his speech by thanking those who gave their “time, resources, energy [and] passion,” to the March of Dimes.
“The work that March of Dimes does is not abstract. It’s not statistic. This is family. This is kids, this is babies. So the support that everyone here is giving to families and parents around the country should not be understated. I greatly appreciate you guys being here. I appreciate this award,” he shared.
