Carbondale city leaders introduce live music events before city council meetings

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) – The city of Carbondale announced a new live music event that will take place before the city council meetings.

According to the city, Civic Sessions will be a brief, “unplugged” or acoustic performance by Carbondale musicians in the lobby of city hall starting at 5:30 p.m.

“I introduced Civic Sessions as a way to open City Council meetings with the sound of Carbondale, SIUC, and our region’s renowned and deeply rooted music culture,” said city council member Dawn Roberts. “The series is a way to bring residents, students, and neighbors together with their City government to celebrate our talented musicians and foster a shared sense of connection and pride in our community—one song at a time.”

She said she was inspired by similar offerings in other cities with a music scene.

The inaugural performance will be on Tuesday, December 9. It’ll feature SIU School of Music faculty, William Cernota on the cello and SIU sophomore Vincent Jones on Contrabass.

According to the city, they are both members of Versa’tile Faculty Student Chamber Music Ensemble, a new ensemble offering a range of free performances for the community.
