Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had an eventful year with some questionable decisions that have seen them grow ever more distant from their royal relatives, as well as their showbiz friends.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been slammed for their alleged pursuit of relevance in Hollywood, contradicting their stance on their privacy and insisting on royal protocol, despite their stance of “finding freedom” from royal life. Earlier this week, Meghan found herself facing controversy after she appeared in her With Love, Meghan, Netflix holiday special.
The $1,700 gown was previously worn by her in 2022 for a Variety photo shoot, with allegations of her having kept the gown without approval flying when she was seen wearing it again. However, a spokesperson told Page Six it was “categorically false” that Meghan took the Galvan gown without asking.
A source added that it was “standard for talent to retain select items from photo shoots — sometimes for security reasons.” They added, “Clothing worn by members of the royal family and other public figures has been targeted for resale in the past.”
However, it was pointed out by insiders that the royals are not allowed to accept free clothing. Friend of the royals and author Hugo Vickers then said, “I resent the use of the word ‘royal family’ because they’re meant to be non-working royals.
“To use the family as an excuse for such protocol is ridiculous and very stupid. They are a member of a family, but they are not working royals, and if they cared at all, they should not be writing nasty books and giving interviews.
“This is not going to help their cause with reconciliation at all; it’s all being done for publicity.” There have been numerous similar incidents throughout the year, including when Meghan has used her royal connections to try and promote her own brand.
On her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, she told guest Mindy Kaling, “It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now… this is our family name.”
Meanwhile, Harper’s Bazaar magazine recently reported how when Meghan entered the room at a private NYC townhouse, a member of staff announced her as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,” despite the only other person in the house being the journalist.
Back in November when Meghan and Harry attended Kris Jenner’s 70th birthday party at Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez’s $165 million Beverly Hills estate they managed to irritate the Kar-Jenner matriarch by demanding that all pictures taken of them at the glitzy bash were removed from Instagram.
People magazine claimed they never signed a waiver to be pictured, however they later backtracked on the topic when multiple sources told Page Six the waiver never existed.
The Kardashian family were left upset by the whole debacle, with an insider telling the publication they got “annoyed with the Sussex camp” for “overshadowing” what was intended to be “a celebration of Kris.”
They added, “There was no consent form. That just makes Kris look ridiculous.” The pair were seen to have attended the party to help network and promote themselves after their Spotify and Netflix deals came to an end.
But, sources close to the pair said they are focused on their philanthropy efforts, having made a $1.3m donation to the Children in Need charity, as well as a $150,000 donation to the Centre for Blast Injury Studies to support research into blast injuries of children in Ukraine and Gaza.
They also made a donation of $200,000 to the World Health Organisation to support medical evacuees from Gaza, as well as $150,000 to Save the Children and $50,000 donation to Masaka Kids Afrikana for aid in Jamaica following the hurricane. Their charity efforts are said to total over $2.5 million.
Harry and Meghan continued their philanthropic efforts when they took Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, to prepare meals for Thanksgiving this week, with their charity Archewell Foundation collaborating with Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles.
