Last night, Prince Harry made a surprise appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as the late night host was discussing royal-themed Christmas movies.
As the Duke of Sussex appeared on set, pretending he was lost while looking to audition for The Gingerbread Christmas Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska, Stephen Colbert introduced him as “Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales-Sussex” and then asked him, “You’re an actual prince, why would you want to be in one of those movies?” Harry replied, “You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies and you’re clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?”
Colbert then took (pretend) offense to his statement, saying, “Look, I wouldn’t say we’re obsessed with royalty,” to which Harry responded, “Really? I heard you elected a king…” referencing President Donald Trump. Earlier this year, Trump called himself “the King” in a Truth Social post, and the White House shared a fake magazine cover that featured Trump in a crown and the words “Long live the king.”
Trump has had a long, and often controversial, history with the royal family. When he visited the UK in September for a State Visit, however, he said of King Charles and Queen Camilla “They’re friends of mine for a long time, long before he was King, and it’s an honor to have him as King. I think he represents the country so well, I’ve watched, he’s such an elegant gentleman.”
Since moving to America in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have gone back and forth on weighing in on American politics. In 2020, Meghan described the presidential election as the “most important election of our lifetime,” but during the 2024 election cycle, the Sussexes did not say anything—though their Archewell Foundation encouraged Americans to vote. Earlier this year, Meghan also spoke about how she didn’t foresee Trump administration tariffs impacting her brand, As Ever, but added, “I think during any time of recession, people still want to find creature comforts, items that can bring them joy.”
