Prince Harry made a series of quips at a business lunch in Los Angeles, stating that life in the Royal Family feels like TV drama Downton Abbey. Last week, the Duke of Sussex served as a surprise guest at the British American Business Council’s (BABC) LA lunch.
He took an opportunity to compare Royal Family life to that of Lord Julian Fellowes’ Downton Abbey. He said: “People sometimes ask if growing up with the Royal Family was a bit like Julian’s Downton Abbey.” He added: “Yeah, but only one of those worlds is filled with drama, intrigue, elaborate dinners, marriages to Americans – and the other is a TV show.”
Harry also reportedly jested about American President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and the upcoming World Cup during his speech, saying that Brits would have to “behave, get through customs and past ICE” to see England play in the tournament.
It comes after the Duke of Sussex made a surprise appearance on host Stephen Colbert’s US talk show on Wednesday as a version of himself auditioning to play a “Christmas prince” in a Hallmark film.
During the segment, Harry acted as if he was lost while walking around the television studio, saying he was looking for auditions for “Gingerbread Christmas Prince saves Christmas in Nebraska”.
When Mr Colbert asked why genuine royalty would pursue such roles, the duke replied: “You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies, and you’re clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?”
Last week, the pair also teased Harry’s appearance with a promotional video that recreated a viral moment from Great British Bake Off with Alison Hammond.
In the clip, Harry pretended to be the presenter Alison, voice while sitting in the guest chair, asking Mr Colbert: “If you were treated like a king for a day, what would you want me to do for you?”
Mr Colbert replied in the style of Northern Irish baker Mark Lutton: “Bake for me probably?” The exchange recreated the well-known misunderstanding where Hammond thought Lutton had said “beg” rather than “bake”.
