The Prince and Princess of Wales have a well-rehearsed code they use to send a signal to one another to subtly communicate when they are at public engagements and events. The secret love language was spotted during the German state visit on December 3, as the pair viewed artefacts from the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle.
At one stage, Princess Catherine, 43, was seen holding a conversation with one of the curators and talking about the items. While her husband appeared interested in their chat, he soon spotted that his uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, was approaching.
To help his wife move on to the next set of viewing items, William, 43, placed a gentle hand on Kate’s back, suggesting a subtle signal that it was time to wrap up their conversation.
This led Catherine to sense William wanted to move on, and they both soon issued a “thank you” to the curator before moving on. The special exhibit at Windsor Castle was one of several events to welcome President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Budenbender to the UK.
One of the most prestigious events during the state visit was the state banquet. The princess shone as she arrived in a sparkling blue Jenny Packham gown, her hair delicately crowned with Queen Victoria’s rare Oriental Circlet tiara.
Princess Catherine has previously spoken about understanding the amount of time taken by royals on a walkabout. In a 2016 documentary titled Queen at Ninety, the Princess said: “I think there is a real art to walkabouts. Everyone teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting, so I think I’ve still got to learn a little bit more and pick up a few more tips I suppose.”
A similar moment occurred when the Prince and Princess of Wales attended the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan in June 2023. William demonstrated slight impatience as he waited for his wife to finish talking to the bride, Crown Princess Rajwa Al Hussein.
The conversation between the two women continued, eventually prompting William to signal to Kate with his hands that she should wrap up the conversation so other guests could talk to the couple.
Additionally, during a Christmas 2024 walkabout with the family, Prince William was caught on video calling a security officer on his mobile phone to tell Catherine to hurry and catch up as she was busy chatting with members of the public, and got left behind.
It was a moment that highlighted her connection with the public, as well-wishers handed her flowers and gifts, but William gently prompted her to move along, once again, even as she continued to interact with the crowd.
