Since acquiring a stake in the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1996, Larry Tanenbaum has brought the NBA, MLS, a WNBA expansion team and three minor league franchises to his hometown. The Toronto native built an eight-team portfolio that has combined to win seven championships, helped fund the construction or renovation of eight sports venues, and launched two RSNs. Tanenbaum, SBJ’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in 2020, earned the trust of commissioners by tirelessly putting league-level interests above those of his teams; the respect of fans as he shuns suites to mingle with them during games; and the gratitude of his country, having been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian award.
