Was 2025 the best year ever for physical media? Perhaps not in terms of numbers — the days when a DVD of even a moderately successful studio movie could move 10 or 20 million units at Best Buy are clearly far in the distant past. But when it comes to quality and breadth of titles? It’s been an extraordinary year.
The studio divisions that still care about and protect their legacy, like the laudable Warner Archive label, have been doing some of their best work, and the boutique 4K and Blu-ray companies that license titles from the studios — Vinegar Syndrome, Shout! Factory, Imprint, and others — have been on fire with deluxe editions, to the point that our monthly physical media recommendations column has only been able to scratch the surface of what’s out there.
