FISHERS – This year’s Mudsock boys wrestling trophy decisively wound up in the hands of Hamilton Southeastern.
The Royals hosted the annual meet between them and Fishers on Tuesday. Southeastern won 10 of the 14 matches on its way to a 41-18 victory. The Tigers won the first three bouts before the Royals took control and claimed 10 of the next 11 matches.
“Everybody did their job,” said HSE coach Nick Brobst. “They stepped up, won matches that we were supposed to win.”
Fishers took an early 12-0 lead after Seth Lamb won at 120 pounds by major decision, Will Hruskoci cruised to a technical fall victory at 126 and Goyito Mireles won a tough 9-7 decision at 132.
After that, the floodgates opened for the Royals. Owen McGuire won by fall and Parker Culp picked up a technical fall to bring Southeastern within 12-11. Roben Randhawa got a 9-7 decision to push the Royals into the lead at 14-12; they would never trail again.
That was just the first half of a seven-match run for HSE. Dylan Lane, Evan Biehl and Reid Snider all got decision victories, sandwiched around a technical fall for Cohen Davis at 165. After all that, Southeastern led 28-12.
The Tigers’ Julian Burgett stopped the run with a pin at 215, keeping Fishers in the dual. But A.W. VanKirk clinched the match with a close win at 285, a 4-3 decision. Nolan Culp and William Lakes won their matches by technical falls to finish the meet.
The meet was a satisfying win for the Royals, as Brobst said his team has been “banged up pretty significantly.”
“It’s the closest to full strength we’ve been,” said Brobst. “We still have a top 25 kid that wasn’t in the lineup today in Max Inman. But other than that, everybody else was there, which made us look a little better than we have the first couple tournaments.”
Both Southeastern and Fishers compete in tournaments this weekend. The Royals travel to the Fort Wayne Carroll Super Duals, while the Tigers head south for the Columbus East Invitational.
