New Jersey officials on Tuesday held a groundbreaking ceremony at the future site of 1888 Studios, a massive film and television production campus planned for Bayonne.
In partnership with Paramount Pictures, 1888 Studios will be a 1.6-million-square-foot development containing 23 sound stages in Hudson County less than 30 minutes from Manhattan.
1888 Studios is designed to place the Garden State at the forefront of the global entertainment industry, officials said at the ceremony.
“Incredible morning breaking ground on 1888 Studios in Bayonne. Once completed, the 58-acre campus will be the largest film and TV facility in the Northeast,” Murphy said in a Facebook post.
Paramount recently signed a 10-year lease agreement with 1888 Studios, committing to establishing a major production hub in New Jersey.
Why is the studio called 1888?
That’s the year Thomas Edison filed a preliminary patent for an early motion picture camera.
1888 Studios is designed to attract industry leaders, generating significant revenue and cementing New Jersey’s reputation in film and TV production, Murphy said.
“As the birthplace of the motion picture industry, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate the 1888 Studios in Bayonne – a project that represents another chapter in world-class film and television production here in the Garden State,” Murphy said.
Once completed, 1888 Studios is expected to join at least two other major studio projects planned for New Jersey.
Other projects include Netflix Studios’ multi-phase, billion-dollar East Coast production hub with several sound stages in Fort Monmouth and Lionsgate Newark Studios.

Netflix’s Fort Monmouth studio has been years in the making, requiring approvals from officials in Oceanport and Eatontown. The 289-acre complex will span both boroughs.
Lionsgate Newark Studios, an anchor project with multiple sound stages and production facilities, is also in the works.
The Lionsgate project is a $125 million film and television studio planned for the former site of the Seth Boyden Court public housing complex in Newark’s industrial South Ward.
The New Jersey Economic Development Authority announced in 2022 that it had granted Lionsgate “studio partner” status under the Garden State Film and Digital Media Jobs Act, allowing the company to seek tax credits.
