Elton John has shown his pride in a sweet tribute to his husband, David Furnish, on social media. The iconic singer re-shared a post uploaded by Furnish on Instagram, saying, “Congratulations!” as he marked the emotional occasion. His husband shared a snap of himself at Royal Holloway University in London speaking at a graduation ceremony. He typed: “An inspirational afternoon at @royalholloway watching the next generation of PhDs collect their hard-earned degrees. I revelled at the diversity and compassion of their dissertations. It filled me with hope.
“I was also grateful to receive my Doctor of Literature honoris causa, for my 30+ years work with @ejaf. I accepted the degree with humility, because the lifesaving work being recognised has never been the work of one person. I share this honour with the all activists, clinicians, scientists, volunteers, educators, public servants, donors – and above all – the people living with HIV, whose courage, determination and leadership have driven progress for decades.”
He concluded with: “Thank-you to everyone at Royal Holloway for honouring me and welcoming me so warmly to your community. Thank-you also to the entire team at the Elton John AIDS Foundation – especially my indefatigable husband @eltonjohn.”
Many of David’s followers have flooded the comments section with positive words of support. One person said: “Wow, this is fantastic. Many congratulations to you on this special day. xx.”
A second similarly echoed: “Well deserved David,” as a third fan also chimed in: “Congratulations David,” with clapping hands emojis.
Since Elton wrapped up his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour two years ago, the music legend has suffered eyesight problems, but he’s not letting it stop him.
The Your Song hitmaker – who retired from touring to spend more time with his sons Zachary and Elijah, whom he has with husband David – contracted a severe eye infection last July, which left him blind in his right eye, with “limited vision” in his left.
He told The Times in April: “It’s distressing. You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have.
“I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here [left eye] So you say to yourself, just get on with it.”
Speaking previously about his battle with blindness, Elton told The Guardian newspaper: “I’m an optimist permanently, I’ve got bad eyesight at the moment.
“There have been days I’ve been miserable, but then I think about how lucky I am, I’ve got a new respect for sight-impaired people, but I’ve got a great life and hopefully my sight will improve.”
