The Royals have signed utility player Abraham Toro to a minor league deal, according to writer Daniel Álvarez-Montes. Toro spent last year with the Red Sox and hit .239/.289/.371 with seven home runs in 77 games. He is a 28-year-old switch-hitter who is capable of playing all over the field, although he has spent most of his time at second and third.
Toro hails from Montreal but is of Venezuelan descent. He attended Seminole State College in Oklahoma, where he played well enough to be selected in the fifth round of the 2016 draft by the Astros. He made his MLB debut with them in 2019, but they shipped him to the Mariners in a four-player deal in 2021. He has appeared in 442 career MLB games with the Astros, Mariners, Brewers, Athletics, and Red Sox, and is a career .223/.285/.356 hitter.
Toro has suffered from an absurdly low BABIP of .246 in his career, although he has enough of a sample size in his career that it may not be just bad luck. He hardly walks, but he has a very low strikeout rate as well. His 83.3 percent contact rate over the last two years is one of the better rates in baseball over that time.
The Royals feature three of the best infielders in baseball with Maikel Garcia at third, Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop, and Vinnie Pasquantino at first base. Jonathan India and Michael Massey are expected to split time at second, so Toro will compete for a reserve infield role with players like Tyler Tolbert, Nick Loftin, Connor Kaiser, and Kevin Newman.
