Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy spoke with reporters on Thursday about the progress of rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals heading into Week 16 and the potential of gaining more experience against the Tennessee Titans.
“You want to see more time from him (Jalen Royals), if possible. We’ve been in a position where these wide receivers that we have, we feel very fortunate with the guys that we’ve had for the middle of the season, when Rashee (Rice) came back,” said Nagy, “Some of it’s a numbers thing for him, and it’s somewhat of a redshirt year in a way. He’s practicing hard in practice, but for him, there’s a lot of good stuff there with him, and I’m excited to see what he’s going to do. Whether it’s these next three games or the future, but yes, it’s going to give some kids an opportunity to maybe get some more time that they wouldn’t have gotten, and it’s our job to see that and to give them those chances.”
Royals has been a victim of the numbers game on the depth chart with veteran wide receivers playing ahead of him all season. He missed the start of the regular season due to an injury that slowed his progress.
The former Utah State standout has yet to record a catch in four games spent primarily on special teams.
