The Royals added bullpen help Friday by acquiring left-handed reliever Matt Strahm from the Phillies in exchange for right-hander Jonathan Bowlan.
Strahm, 34, returns to the organization that drafted him in 2012. He has spent the past three seasons with Philadelphia, posting a 2.71 ERA across 188 appearances. An All-Star in 2024, Strahm recorded a 1.87 ERA that season and followed with a 2.74 ERA in 2025 while setting a career high with 22 holds.
The Royals targeted a dependable left-handed reliever after recent roster moves and view Strahm as a high-leverage option late in games. He has been effective against both left- and right-handed hitters and brings postseason experience to the bullpen.
Bowlan, 29, appeared in 34 games for Kansas City last season after moving to a full-time relief role.
Strahm is scheduled to earn $7.5 million in 2026.
