On December 6, Michael was among the musicians selected to perform at the Vatican’s sixth annual Concert for the Poor in Rome, Italy. As the Grammy winner performed some of his greatest hits for the audience, one important person was in the crowd: Pope Leo XIV.
When Michael began singing a cover of Nat King Cole’s “L.O.V.E.,” viewers saw the Pope enjoying the rendition in a clip later posted on Instagram.

When fans saw Michael’s performance, they reacted emotionally online.

“I’ve always believed there’s a light in each of us, and this experience renewed mine in a way I didn’t expect,” he wrote. “I’m deeply grateful and humbled to have shared my music in this setting. As we move into the holiday season, I hope you find moments of peace, connection, and comfort. Whatever you may be holding, I hope it feels a little lighter.
