This week in West Alabama, Jan. 1-7, the ice-skating in Government Plaza opens for its final day; singer-songwriters play Sanctuary on 25th; book events at Barnes and Noble, and Ernest and Hadley.

Holidays on the Plaza: Last day for the 2025-2026 seasonal event, ice-skating, the Tinsel Trail (a fund-raiser for Tuscaloosa One Place) in Government Plaza, downtown Tuscaloosa. Skating will be open 10 a.m.-9 p.m., and passes are $10, for this final day of the season. The admission price includes rental skates. The outdoor ice-skating rink is set up adjacent to the downtown Tuscaloosa parking deck, with the 200-plus decorated tree Tinsel Trail, a fund-raiser for Tuscaloosa One Place, covering most of the rest of the five-acre park. Meet the author/book discussion with Nico Lang: 6-7:30 p.m., The Brick House, Ernest & Hadley Booksellers, 1928 Seventh St., Tuscaloosa. Lang will discuss their book “American Teenager: How Trans Kids Are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era.” After the talk, there’ll be time for Q&A, and book signing.
