The King and Queen of Sweden have made a major announcement for 2026. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia will this year celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, as well as the King’s 80th birthday.
The Royal House of Sweden took to its official Instagram account, the social media platform for the King and Queen, to announce two major celebrations and share a new portrait of the royal couple. Carl Gustaf looked very smart in a dark suit decorated with his medals and honours, while the Swedish Queen looked stunning in a dark green lace gown, also sporting her orders.
With celebrations set for June 13, it will prove to be an incredibly busy day for royal fans as there’s another huge event scheduled for the same day.
The same day, King Charles will lead the nation as we celebrate his birthday with the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
On April 30, the Swedes will celebrate the King’s milestone 80th birthday during the Valborg fair, a major annual event in the country that marks the arrival of spring.
The festivities will include a special performance in front of the Royal Palace in Stockholm. On June 19, the royal couple will mark their 50th wedding anniversary with a ceremony of pomp and pageantry.
They are expected to tour Norrström on the Swedish royal barge Vasaorden before getting on a carriage as part of a motorcade which will march through the capital.
Other events are also set to take place and they will be announced at a later date.
The Swedish Royal House said of the special event: “When the day falls during midsummer, the golden wedding day is celebrated instead on Saturday, June 13.”
Last May, the Swedish royals travelled to Britain to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla. The two royal couples were pictured together as they planted a tree at Windsor Castle’s Home Park.
While the King and Queen will be celebrating their milestone very publicly on June 13, their British counterparts will also be out in force as Trooping the Colour falls on the same day.
It will see over 1,500 soldiers, 400 musicians, and 200 horses take to the streets of London to celebrate the monarch’s official birthday. Senior members of the Royal Family will take part in the ceremony before appearing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch a spectacular RAF flypast.
