It was Nikki Glaser’s affinity for ruthlessly roasting celebrities that secured her the gig as host of the Golden Globes last year.
Unlike her predecessor Jo Koy, whose wince-inducing opening monologue at the 2024 ceremony was made impossibly worse by the fact he spectacularly came back on stage to blame his writers for it, Glaser was a hit, and has been asked back. But there’s one star the 41-year-old comedian is struggling to find a joke about.

“She’s been the toughest nut to crack,” Glaser told the Associated Press of Julia Roberts ahead of the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, which will be held at Los Angeles’ Beverly Hilton on Sunday (Monday in Australia). “But I’m going to crack it.”
Roberts is nominated for best female actor thanks to her role in After the Hunt, and fittingly, that sits in the drama category. The audiences Glaser has been testing her jokes about the actress on in local clubs, as it turns out, take Roberts incredibly seriously.

“I just want to do the perfect joke, but it’s like people do not have a sense of humour about Julia Roberts,” Glaser said.
“She’ll be fine – other people are not fine on her behalf. Like the most innocent joke about her that I made a couple times trying it out, they booed, they were like jeering.”
Leonardo DiCaprio, however, will be ripe for Glaser’s picking, with One Battle After Another leading the film nominations with nine nods. The White Lotus, meanwhile, is the most nominated show with six nods, with Adolescence trailing closely thanks to its five (including one for 16-year-old actor Owen Cooper).
Flying the Australian flag is Jacob Elordi, who scored a supporting actor nod for film Frankenstein, which he won at the Critics’ Choice Awards on Monday, and a lead actor nod for limited series The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
