Father John Misty is back with a new song titled “The Old Law,” his first new material since the 2024 release of Mahashmashana. Stream it below.
Co-produced by Josh Tillman himself with Drew Erickson, the track isn’t new to diehard fans. It debuted live in 2024 and quickly became a setlist staple under the working title “God’s Trash.” Musically, the track pairs his airy vocals with a steady acoustic guitar and a lively electric riff over top.

“A man’s life, God’s trash/ There’s no law but the old law, baby,” Tillman sighs on the chorus. “Petit four, nothing dies/ ‘Cept by ass drawn kamikaze.”

Tillman originally teased “The Old Law” on Instagram as “God’s Trash” in November 2024, in response to Kendrick Lamar’s surprise album, GNX, dropping the same day as Mahashmashana. “It’s okay only other times it’s happened was 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2022,” he quipped in response to a fan, seemingly forgetting the Lamar-curated 2018 Black Panther soundtrack.
