The late Prince Philip reportedly posed a blunt 4-worded warning to his grandson just three years before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior working royals. January 8, 2026 marked the sixth anniversary of Meghan and Harry’s shock statement where that shared that they intended to step away from duties.
The Duke of Sussex was previously granted a few major titles, one which included being Captain General of the Royal Marines. It was a title that was previously held by Philip for six decades – and one which he was extremely passionate about. Harry was given the honour in 2017, three years before ‘Megxit’, with Philip delivering a blunt warning to his grandson at the handover: “Don’t f*** it up”.
Harry then only held the role for three years and two months, with his decision to step down from royal life meaning various changes in his life.
He is also banned from wearing his ceremonial military uniform.
Following his grandfather’s death in April 2021, Harry noted his “service, honour and great humour,” and referred to him as a “legend of banter”.
Speaking of Meghan Markle, who wed Harry in 2018, one royal expert shared how Philip “quite liked her” at the start of her relationship with his grandson. However, Philip later compared her to Wallis Simpson – with the late royal, like Meghan, also an American divorcee.
A source previously told The Sun that much of Philip’s anger with Meghan came “from seeing Her Majesty upset”.
Meghan and Harry now reside in California with their children, six-year-old Prince Archie and four-year-old Princess Lilibet.
Harry is set to return to the UK later this month, whislt Meghan will reportedly remain in the US with Archie and Lilibet.
It is understood that he currently “has no plans” to see his father during his visit as he gets set to appear at his trial against the publisher of the Daily Mail, Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL).
