Why Cynthia Erivo Isn't at the 2026 Golden Globes

THE RUNDOWN

  • Cynthia Erivo isn’t at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, despite a historic second nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
  • She’s preparing to star in a one-woman West End production of Dracula, portraying all 23 characters.
  • Her rigorous production schedule for Dracula conflicts with the Globes ceremony, Variety confirmed on Tuesday.

While Ariana Grande is at tonight’s Golden Globes, her Wicked: For Good co-star Cynthia Erivo couldn’t make it. Erivo had to miss the show due to a scheduling conflict, Variety confirmed on January 6. The actress is nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her performance as Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good.

The nomination marks a historic moment for Erivo. Following her first nomination last year for the franchise’s original film, she is the first Black woman to be recognized twice in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. The movie also earned other nominations at this year’s Globes, including Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Original Song (“No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble”), and Best Supporting Actress for co-star Ariana Grande.

According to Variety, Erivo’s absence is due to a scheduling conflict with her current theatrical project in London. She is starring in the West End production of Dracula, a one‑woman stage adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic horror story in which she takes on all 23 characters, including the titular vampire. The production opens at the Noël Coward Theatre in February and runs through the end of May.

Variety reports that Erivo is “deep into production” on Dracula, making it difficult for her to travel to Los Angeles for the Golden Globes ceremony. The rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule leaves little room for long-distance travel during awards season.

Dracula marks Erivo’s return to the West End stage more than a decade after her acclaimed performance as Celie in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple, a role that helped launch her Tony Award-winning Broadway career.

She has described the past year as a whirlwind of projects that have pushed her creatively and logistically. “At some point, there are things that I could not think of to put on the list that were happening,” Erivo told The Hollywood Reporter last month, reflecting on a year that included opening the Oscars with Ariana Grande, performing at Coachella, hosting the Tony Awards, releasing a studio album and memoir, filming multiple movies, and returning to press and awards events for Wicked: For Good amid Dracula rehearsals.

She continued, “If it feels like [an opportunity] might be something that I’m going to have to learn from—this is really scary, this is going to force me to find something else in my character, something else in who I am—then I say yes.” The actress added that while the schedule is intense, she embraces these challenges as opportunities to grow and explore new roles.
