The tragedy of the Guernsey Martyrs stands as one of the most chilling testimonies to the religious fervor of the Marian Persecutions. In July 1556, on the Channel Island of Guernsey, three women—Catherine Cauchés and her daughters, Guillemine Gilbert and Perotine Massey—found themselves ensnared in a legal trap that shifted rapidly from a petty charge of theft to the capital crime of heresy. Though they were cleared of the initial robbery, their lack of conformity to the Roman Catholic Church was deemed an unpardonable offense by the Dean of Guernsey. Despite their pleas, they were condemned to the stake at Tower Hill, a decision that would eventually stain the reputation of the local authorities for centuries.
The execution itself was marked by a moment of singular horror that distinguished it from the many other burnings of the era.
