ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – In December, musician David Lindner released Come, an original song written for Advent, a liturgical season observed by Christians in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
Lindner, who is currently the pastor at SixEight Church in Battle Ground, WA, says Advent is about “anticipation and expectation,” concepts he wanted listeners to feel as much as hear in Come.
One way to articulate that kind of abstract longing in sound, Lindner says, is through the pedal steel guitar, the inclusion of which “really helped to create a feeling of ‘something is coming… eventually.’”
Lindner says he has carried this instinct for a long time, one he believes he absorbed culturally and then honed while growing up in Southeast Ohio. Though born elsewhere, Lindner lived in Jackson, Ohio, from the time he was two until he left for college in 1997. His family still resides in the Jackson–McArthur region, and he credits the music he encountered there with shaping his approach to songwriting.
While artists like Savage Garden and The Verve Pipe helped shape Lindner’s musical landscape in the ’90s, he says his church life in nearby Oak Hill, OH was really where he “[…] learned to love the storytelling that happens in country music.”
Although Come was released during Advent, Lindner says its message is truly evergreen, extending well beyond December.
“[…] the idea of expectation for justice lives in all of us all year long,” Lindner said. “We all long for a day when all the wrongs in our world will finally be made right, […] when we can live in a world with no more tears, heartache, or pain. The hope of Advent is our hope for every day.”
