With decades-spanning influence in music, film, business and philanthropy, Dolly Parton remains as relevant and beloved as ever. From pioneering literacy programs to launching a beauty line, she’s much more than rhinestones and country twang. 1. She grew up in a log cabin

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born January 19, 1946 and grew up in a small cabin in rural Tennessee. You can visit a replica of it today.

2. Her early career

Parton’s uncle bought her first guitar at an early age. She made her Grand Ole Opry premiere when she was only 13.

Dolly moved to Nashville the day after she graduated from high school.

4. Her first Number One

Parton had her first chart-topping hit in 1971 with “Joshua.” It also earned her one of her numerous Grammy nominations.

5. How many awards does she have?

Dolly had received a total of 55 Grammy nominations, including ten wins. She’s also twice been nominated for Oscars and has multiple Emmy nominations as well.

6. She’s a Hollywood “star”

Parton was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984.

7. She once turned down Elvis

Parton famously turned down the chance to let Elvis record her song “I Will Always Love You” because of the demands his manager placed on the arrangement.

8. The history behind another top hit

“Jolene,” another of her top hits was originally inspired by a bank teller who was a bit too flirtatious with Dolly’s husband, Carl Dean.

9. She owns a lot of wigs

Parton has been very open over the years about wearing wigs to avoid over-styling her hair. She’s revealed she owns hundreds and wears a different one every day.

10. She owns an amusement park

Parton is an owner of Dollywood, located in Pigeon Forge, TN. She bought into the amusement park in 1986 and it opened for that season under the new name.

11. She’s a philanthropist

Dolly started the Dollywood Foundation back in 1988. It started by offering scholarships to local high school students, but had developed over the years into a more far-reaching organization which also provides free books to young children in the community and across the globe.

12. She helped fund COVID-19 research

Parton donated $1 million to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center which eventually helped lead to the development of Moderna’s vaccine.

13. She has her own line of cosmetics

Dolly Beauty products launched online in 2024 and began to appear in major retail outlets last year.

14. World Record ICON

Parton was recognized last year by Guinness World Records as an ICON, holding a total of 11 world records as of that time.
