Sphere Entertainment has announced plans to open a new Sphere venue near Washington D.C.
The company behind the $2.3 billion Sphere (cap. 18,600) arena in Las vegas said the new venue at the National Harbor entertainment complex near Washington, D.C will have a capacity of around 6,000. Its Las Vegas venue was ranked No. 1 on Billboard and Pollstar’s charts of top-grossing worldwide venues last year.
The project will be backed by the State of Maryland and Prince George’s County along with real estate developer Peterson Companies. Its backers estimate the project would support around 2,500 jobs during construction and approximately 4,750 jobs once operational. Once open, the venue is projected to generate more than $1 billion in annual economic impact for the region.
The National Harbor Sphere would be the first smaller-format version of the venue concept. Plans include an exterior LED display, known as the Exosphere, and an interior LED screen. The venue would also incorporate immersive sound, haptic seating, and environmental effects. Programming would include original Sphere Experiences, concerts, and brand events.
National Harbor is a tourist destination that attracts more than 15 million visitors annually, and includes entertainment, dining, retail, gaming, convention, and hospitality offerings.
“Our focus has always been on creating a global network of Spheres across forward-looking cities,” said Sphere Entertainment executive chairman and CEO James L. Dolan. “Sphere is a new experiential medium. With a commitment to bringing innovative opportunities to residents and visitors, Governor Moore, County Executive Braveboy, the State of Maryland, and Prince George’s County recognize the potential for a Sphere at National Harbor to elevate and advance immersive experiences across the area.”
Maryland governor Wes Moore said, “This will be one of the largest economic development projects in Prince George’s County history – proving once again our state is the best place in the country to bring dreams to life. We’re excited for what this means for our people, and how it will showcase the best of what Maryland has to offer to everyone who visits.”
