Royal Academy of Music composition student Luca Zucchi created a new commission for the Lord Mayor of Westminster. The suite of music premiered in October and is now able to share to the public.
In celebration of the Academy’s location within the City of Westminster and reflecting the five ‘fair areas’ the council is committed to for residents, Luca composed a new piece for brass quintet. The idea behind the commission was to promote up and coming students at the Academy as well as promoting classical music to a younger audience.
The Fairer Westminster Suite is a new piece, split into five sections written for a group of two trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba. It will be performed by Queentet, an all-female brass group of Academy musicians.
On being asked to compose the new commission, Luca said:
Being asked to write this piece has been an incredibly exciting opportunity and I cannot thank the Lord Mayor and the Academy enough. The social dimension of his commission, based on Westminster City Council’s Fairer Westminster plan, has made this project very unusual and extremely stimulating.”
The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg added:
I have always been so impressed by the standard of music and composition from the students at the Royal Academy of Music. Every concert I’ve attended has always left me in awe of the talent by our young musicians and Luca is no exception. When I met Luca in June, his passion and knowledge of music was infectious.”
