Snail Mail spent her summer tour debuting new songs, so we were anticipating a new album this year. That was prescient; Lindsey Jordan does indeed have a new LP on the way, her first since 2021’s Valentine. Ricochet is due in March via Matador. Jordan recorded it with Momma’s Aron Kobayashi Ritch at Fidelitorium Recordings in her new home state (What is: North Carolina?) plus the Brooklyn studios Nightfly and Studio G.
Lead single “Dead End” is out now. It’s giving off some major mid-’90s alt-rock vibes — textures out of The Bends or Mellon Collie, a “Wonderwall” strum pattern at times — but its smooth movie-soundtrack melancholia also takes me back to Color Theory by Snail Mail’s longtime peer Soccer Mommy. The wordless “nah nah nah” section at the end elevates this one to the stratosphere.
Speaking of shooting things up into the sky: Jordan made this song’s music video with Elsie Richter. In a press release, Jordan explains, “We shot the video for ‘Dead End’ in random places all around rural North Carolina between the hours of 5pm and 4am on one of the coldest nights of my life. The goal was to be inconspicuous with the fireworks, but someone called the cops on us.” Watch below.
