Chase Infiniti gets ready for ‘One Battle After Another’ Oscar season
“One Battle After Another” star Chase Infiniti hit the red carpet at the Palm Springs International Film Awards.
“Sinners” is taking a bite out of the Oscars — and both its lead and supporting actor nominees have New Jersey ties.
Ryan Coogler’s popular gangster musical vampire movie is up for 16 nominations at the 98th Academy Awards including best picture, actor (Michael B. Jordan), supporting actress (Wunmi Mosaku) and supporting actor (Delroy Lindo). It breaks the previous record of 14 held by “Titanic,” “All About Eve” and “La La Land.”
“One Battle After Another” earned 14 nods, announced Jan. 22, while “Marty Supreme” and “Sentimental Value” each received nine.
Hosted for the second consecutive year by Conan O’Brien, the Oscars will be held March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and air live on ABC and Hulu (7 p.m. ET/4 PT).
Ethan Hawke, and “Marty Supreme” are also among this year’s Oscar nominees with New Jersey DNA. The awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will be televised 7 p.m. Sunday March 15.
One major Jersey shutout: “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” the much-heralded biopic, got no nominations.
Here are some local standouts from the Oscar cavalcade:
‘Sinners’
This phantasmagorical vampire thriller and social satire by Ryan Coogler features a tour de force performance by Michael B. Jordan, Best Actor nominee, as twin brothers Smoke and Stack. Jordan grew up in Newark. Best supporting actor Delroy Lindo is a former Englewood resident.
Coogler was nominated for best director and the film for best picture. In all, the film got 16 nominations — the most for any film ever.
‘Marty Supreme’
This sports comedy, directed by Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet as a 1950s Ping-Pong champion, got nine nominations, including Best Actor (Chalamet), director (Safdie) and picture. It has scenes shot at Meadowlands Arena, Paterson, Elizabeth’s Ritz Theatre, and Chesterfield Township. It also got a nomination in a brand new category: casting.
‘Song Sung Blue’
Kate Hudson got a best actress nod for her role in this musical film about a Neil Diamond tribute band. Hudson is not from New Jersey. But the movie is — and then some. Standing in for Wisconsin, in Craig Brewer’s film, are Denville, Elizabeth, Florham Park, Garwood, Glen Ridge, Irvington, Jersey City, Keansburg, Matawan, Montclair, Old Tappan, Paterson, and Wayne. Thirteen towns in all!
‘Blue Moon’
Ethan Hawke, best actor nominee for playing frustrated Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart, grew up in West Windsor, and attended the private Hun School in Princeton. Rob Kaplow, the writer of the screenplay (also nominated) is from Metuchen. (Bobby Cannavale, who plays his bartender and de facto therapist, is from Union City; he was not nominated).
It should also be noted that three of the nominated films have connections to Warner Bros. Entertainment: “Sinners,” “One Battle After Another,” (produced by) and “F1” (distributed by). CEO of Warner Bros. is Pamela Abdy, from Florham Park.
