McCollum reveals it took him three tries to finally get this recording right.
After years of teasing it in his live shows and building high demand from his listeners, Parker McCollum’s fan-favorite song “Big Ole Fancy House” is finally out now via MCA.
This tune quickly gained traction among the Texas native’s audience for its powerful narrative that dives deep into the emptiness that can hide behind wealth and success. It’s a confession delivered straight from McCollum’s heart that leaves listeners hanging onto every word.
“Y’all been asking for this one for a while so I’m glad its finally getting to you,” he shared. “Took a couple of times of cutting it before it felt good enough to release, and I think I got it the way it should be heard. Appreciate all the love everyone has shown this song. Means a lot.”
Speaking with Country Now backstage at Crash My Playa, the country star shared that the idea to write this vulnerable story came to him during a writing session at his home in South Texas with the Love Junkies, aka Lori McKenna, Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose. The group of them came together over a weekend when McCollum’s wife Hallie Ray Light was out of town.
During her absence, he realized that the “Big Ole Fancy House” they live in actually feel worthless without her love present to make it feel like a real home. McCollum also admits that this was a story that felt so personal and exciting to him that he recorded it three times until getting it right.
“My wife was out of town for the weekend, and we were writing songs and I kind of sitting around, missing her, being in that big old house without her,” he explained. “I was like, ‘man, it’s nice to have nice things, but it really doesn’t mean much if you don’t have the right people around you.’”
McCollum used those real-life emotions to pen a song that paints a picture of a luxury life with two swimming pools, several “fancy cars”, and more space than one person knows what to do with. At its core, the story is anything but glamorous as he proves that no matter how big or “fancy” your life may seem on the outside, none of it is worth it if you don’t have someone to share it with.
“Well, I thought you would be the one to kill me/ Guess it’s true, I can’t live with the memory/ What do I do? I thought that I could live without you, and I lied/ Yeah, this big ole empty house is just eating me alive,” he sings.
Inside Parker McCollum’s “Big Ole Fancy House,” it’s the emotions that fill the space while his vocals float over the midtempo guitar strums that represent his longing to hold the people he loves above anything else.
The highly anticipated track will serve as one of four new songs set to be featured on Deluxe Edition of McCollum’s critically acclaimed album of 2025, PARKER MCCOLLUM. The other unreleased titles set to appear on PARKER MCCOLLUM Deluxe Edition include “Montgomery County,” “The One Before The One” and “Wind My Friend,” all dropping March 20.
Fans can catch Parker on the road throughout 2026, including his fourth straight appearance at the Houston Rodeo and a return to Red Rocks Amphitheatre, where he’s sold out shows three years in a row.
