Meghan Markle’s huge deal with Netflix has reportedly been scrapped, and now, TV chef Rosemary Shrager has revealed her views on the Duchess’s attempt at carving a name out in baking
Meghan Markle wasn’t “going to get her hands dirty” with her cookery and baking show. The Duchess of Sussex had launched her lifestyle brand via her Netflix show, as well as a string of documentaries with the streaming giant.
But most recently, it was reported that Netflix will not renew their £100million contract with the royal. Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, decided to step away from their lives as senior working royals in January 2020 and announced they would be living financially independent.
It was then that they struck up a deal with the streaming giant, which saw the likes of Harry & Meghan, With Love, Meghan and Polo, air on the network. But after the series was axed after failing to enter the top 300 programmes, celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager believes that the Duchess was not going to get her hands dirty in the kitchen.
“I haven’t watched it,” Rosemary told the Mirror, before adding through laughter: “She would probably give me the impression she’s too attractive to be doing it.” However, the 75-year-old disclosed that she would be having a “sneaky peek” at Meghan’s shows.
Rosemary continued: “I don’t know anybody else who’s seen it, but I think it’s because we’re in the industry. She’s a lady – she’s not exactly going to get her hands dirty if she has to get into the kitchen with a brigade of chefs. I can’t imagine her doing that, but I might be wrong.”
A source told The Sun of Netflix parting ways with the Duke and Duchess: “The deal is done; no more shows will be made. Netflix feel they’ve got all they can from the couple. Netflix were clever in that they got a hell of a lot of viewers for the first documentary series, and knew, realistically, it would prove the zenith of content from the Montecito pair.
“They’re not unhappy with how things turned out — they got those initial hits, and produced one of the most talked-about shows of all time.” They added that content had become “weaker” and for £20million a year, “anything was better than nothing.”
They went on to say that for the Duke, it would be a “blow” and a “huge loss of revenue”. Rosemary has teamed up with Numan to launch their digital cookbook to satisfy January cravings, something she instantly leapt at the chance to help with.
She said of the project: “It’s come at the right moment, I feel I’m 40 years trained for it. It’s absolutely brilliant, I do it for myself because it’s important. It was a natural acceptance – everybody has cravings, they are not a moral failing, I think they’re natural. You can’t help it, it was an interesting exercise but something that really works for me and how to develop recipes that help cravings.
“We’re launching the cookbook with three delicious recipes, homemade baked beans, you can eat it because it’s healthy, and it will help you. It will help you develop that craving; we set it down to feeling fatigued. It’s really important. Even a beetroot brownie, it’s all natural, it’s just lovely, it fills that sugar rush you need without taking sugar!”
Rosemary said of coming up with her recipes: “It’s all about balance, we have taste buds – you have to get these flavourings, as well as protein and fibre, with few carbs. The whole thing has been a balanced situation; we’ve been working with a nutritionist as well, and I think this is very important, and we’re giving people information on why and where the balance is, and you know, the whole information is in there.”
She explained that food “uses all of our senses,” adding: “You’ve got to give your body a fair whip at the game, that’s it, you’ve got to make it possible to work, that’s how I see it.”
