  • A new concert series in Columbus will feature bass players in the lead role.
  • The series, conceived by musician Myke Rock, aims to showcase the versatility of the bass guitar.
  • Each show will feature multiple bassists and a drummer performing popular music.

With flashy frontmen and guitar gods stealing all the thunder, bass players are often overlooked and underappreciated.

Despite a pantheon of esteemed bassists including Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, John Paul Jones, and Paul McCartney, these beat-keepers remain unsung heroes.

However, a four-concert series conceived by Columbus musician Myke Rock will put bass players in the spotlight instead of the background.

“Expansive Breadth of Electric Bass Guitar in Action” will showcase the ways in which the instrument can replace guitar, keyboards and vocals in popular music. Each show will feature three or four bassists and a drummer, as well as a bass-playing opening act.

The idea for the series grew out of Rock’s method of learning songs by mastering all of the parts on bass guitar.

“Since I’ve done solo bass shows in the past, I thought, ‘Why not have a band of bassists playing all parts of a song other than drums?’” he said.

“So many great bassists are right here in and around Columbus. I made a wish list of area bassists, and I think almost every one of them were very enthusiastic about the prospect.”

Funded in part by a $2,500 Artist Opportunities grant from the Ohio Arts Council, the series will begin with “Bass Fission” at 9 p.m. Jan. 30 at Traditions Tavern, 4514 Kenny Road. Rock will perform with bassists Phil Maneri, Steve Perakis and Bradley Mellen, and drummer Erik Diaz. John Zuck will open.
