Matthew McConaughey talks inspiration behind ‘Dazed and Confused’ character
American actor Matthew McConaughey is known for many of his roles but his performance as David Wooderson in the 1993 movie Dazed and Confused remains cult classic.
The Oscar-winning star played the role of a teenager in the coming-of-age comedy film which became his breakout role.
More than 3 decades later, Matthew opened up about the role in the episode of Where Everybody Knows Your Name, hosted by Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson.
Matthew said his inspiration for the role stemmed from his elder brother Pat.
He recalled going with his mother to pick Pat from school.
“I’m looking for Pat. . . . And as we’re going by, about 200 yards away, I see this shadowed figure leaning against the shady wall in the smoking section.” he recalled.
The actor found Pat smoking while leaning against the wall which etched in his mind.
The Interstellar star saw him as his hero saying he “was cooler than James Dean”.
“He was 9 feet tall. He was the coolest man. Now, that’s who I based Wooderson on”.
The role made Matthew a global star and his catchphrase “Alright, alright, alright” became iconic.
