Matthew Lillard is speaking out on Quentin Tarantino‘s recent criticism of his acting abilities.
In an appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, on Dec. 2, 2025, Tarantino said he did “not care for” Lillard as well as Paul Dano and Owen Wilson. Following the podcast, Lillard, as well as Dano and Wilson, received an onslaught of support from numerous celebrities. Most notably, George Clooneywho said he would be “honored to work with” any of them.
“It was crazy. I keep showing it to my wife to convince her that I am worthy, that people still like me,” Lillard told Entertainment Weeklyon Wednesday, Jan. 28.
He joked, “I am a piece of ass!” He also added, “I can’t imagine a more lovely reaction to what happened.”
Lillard also made it clear that there’s no hard feelings towards Tarantino.
“Nobody has to like me,” he said. “Nobody has to like any actor out there, obviously. It’s personal preference. I am not everyone’s first choice, that is obvious, but to then have that kind of reaction was beautiful.”
Lillard had also briefly addressed Tarantino’s comments in December 2025 at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio.
“Listen the point is that it hurts your feelings. It f***ing sucks. And you wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise. You wouldn’t say that to somebody who’s a top-line actor in Hollywood,” he said at the time.
Lillard will be reprising his iconic Scream role, Stu Macher, in the franchise’s upcoming seventh installment. Scream 7 will open in theaters on Feb. 27.
