Odessa A’zion announces departure from ‘Deep Cuts’ after criticism
American actress Odessa A’zion has announced she has departed the cast of Deep Cuts after major backlash.
The Marty Supreme star was cast in the movie adaptation of Holly Brickley’s novel Deep Cuts, which will be directed by Sean Durkin, is set to star Drew Starkey and Cailee Spaeny.
She received criticism for accepting the role of Zoe Gutierrez, who is described in the novel as half-Mexican and half-Jewish, while Odessa herself is white American.
Netizens commented on the misrepresentation in the movie calling for a Latina actress to play the role.
Odessa addressed the criticism herself on her Instagram confirming that she did not know the character when she landed the role.
“Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie”, she clarified.
The 25-year-old said she did not know anything about the character and is frustrated herself.
“I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting.”
She thanked fans for raising voice for the matter and accepted that there are multiple Latina actresses who will play the role better.
