Blackpink’s Rosé has had boyfriends, but she has never unveiled any of them publicly. During her appearance on Call Her Daddy, the singer had a candid back-and-forth with host Alex Cooper about why she doesn’t feel safe talking about her love life and the lengths she’s gone to hide it.
At one point, Cooper asked her if she was seeing anyone.
“Oh, my God,” Rosé began.
“You almost just flung off the chair,” Cooper pointed out.
“Because I just feel like, if I’m like, ‘No,’ I’m like, oh, it’s such a lie; you can tell. I am looking for love.”
“Okay, so maybe you’re talking to someone,” Cooper said.
Rosé didn’t confirm; instead, she explained why she feels uncomfortable talking about dating, reflecting on how “sad” that is.
“The first thing when you ask something like that, it’s like all the articles, all the comments—I just see it, like, rolled down,” Rosé said. “And who has been plotting my downfall, being like, ‘This is the comment we take to—so if anything happens, this is the interview. We go back to tie this crazy story about how addicted to men [she is],’ for example. That’s all I think about. So I would love to just be like, yes or no. But being like, ‘Is this going to define who I am?’ How sad. How sad of a reality is that?”
She started to get emotional: “That makes me sad. It makes me sad for a lot of the industry and how—”
She tried to compose herself, later adding, “I feel like it’s just, like, a normal thing [to be asked]. Just because I was from a K-pop group doesn’t mean I am a different type of human being. I think we’re all born with legs and arms and, you know, everyone’s human.”
But because she is famous, topics like dating require her to think about “how will people try to use my comments to create something. And it’s not like I’m saying the craziest thing right now. Am I saying like I killed someone? No.”
“I’m just asking if you’re seeing someone, not even if you have a boyfriend,” Cooper agreed.
Cooper also asked Rosé why keeping her relationships private feels like the right approach for her right now.
“I think a lot of it has to do to protect the person that I love,” Rosé said. “I’ve noticed that it hurts more if any of my friends are attacked. Or the closer the person is, if they’re ever attacked, it really, really is hurtful.
“And also, I am okay because I am in the public eye and it’s my job, and it comes with the territories, and I’m like, ‘Okay, whatever.’ But, you know, I think it’s a bit unfair.”
She cited the current reality with fans and the media, saying that someday, if she could “maybe really fully trust the media to protect me and be there for me, then I might feel comfortable [sharing]. But for now, I don’t know if I’ve felt completely safe. I’m sure a lot of other people understand what that feels like and experience that.”
She has dated, though. With one past boyfriend, she recalled wearing disguises to visit him.
“I was so paranoid. I’m like, ‘I can never be seen ever,’” she said. “I ordered online from, it’s basically like Amazon but in Korea. I got a wig. I got a black curly wig, like a short one. And then I ordered like, I studied how like older people, like elderly women would dress on the street. I’d be like, ‘Okay, they wear that kind of a skirt and those shoes and that kind of a bag.’ And I would like study it, and I would order it. And I dressed up.”
That lasted for at least six months, with Rosé ultimately breaking up with that partner. For the next one she dated, she didn’t wear that disguise anymore.
She also told Cooper that she would prefer to date someone in the industry because her life—and adolescence as a K-pop trainee—is so different.
“Everyone just usually goes to school, goes to college, and whatnot, has like somewhat of a similar experience growing up,” she said.
She admitted she felt “inexperienced” and “like such an alien,” around them, adding, “They would talk about like all these things. And I’d be like, I don’t know how to relate to it. All I know is, you know, what I’ve done [my work training and with Blackpink].”
